Proving that history can come full circle, seasoned restaurateurs Claudio Gottardo and Gianni Romagnolo de Laurentiis come together again to reopen Mappamondo, a West Village favorite of the 90's.
Returning to 11 Abingdon Square, Italian born owner Claudio Gottardo, originally a chef from Lake Como who came to the US in 1985, and worked as an executive chef in several Manhattan restaurants including Mezzaluna, Café Society, Paper Moon and Barolo, eventually opened Mappamondo in 1992 followed by Mappamondo Due.
Gianni Romagnolo de Laurentiis, of the well-known entertainment industry family, is a long time friend of Claudio who joined the Mappamondo Group in 1993 managing the restaurants until 1999 when the lease of the two Mappamondo restaurants ended forcing their closures.
Over the years both Claudio and Gianni kept hearing their former customers telling them how much they missed Mappamondo's fresh and delicious specialties and their reasonable prices. So when the same location became available last year, it was an easy decision to re-open their homestyle trattoria serving simple, fresh, and delicious Italian food.
Mappamondo continues serving an array of old favorites and many new ones too. The menu was developed with the help of former customers, who during renovations would poke their heads through the door and request their favorite Mappamondo specialty including Polpettine di Verdure, Spinach Flan, Bianchi e Neri, Pappardelle Porcinelle, and Ravioloni di Verdure to name a few.
From the moment you enter the inviting surroundings of Mappamondo, the experience begins. One wall is covered with a large fresco vintage map, other walls house a collection of vintage globes, and an array of world themed items from teapots to cookie jars and bookends to globe candles.
Mappamondo serves lunch, brunch and dinner 7 days a week from 12 PM to12 AM. Delivery is also available. For more information please contact us at 212-206-9330 or email us at
